Metal Theft: All I Want for Christmas is My Copper Back

It’s hard to name a costlier problem for Tucson property owners than copper theft and the destruction of property to obtain copper and other metals for scrap value. A dedicated coalition has come together to find solutions and take action on the issue of metal theft in the region.

The Metal Theft Task Force was launched in June 2012 to combat the widespread problem.  Amber Smith of Metropolitan Pima Alliance (MPA), Mona Deane of Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater Tucson (BOMA GT) and Jason Wong representing Certified Commercial Investment Members Southern Arizona (CCIM) co-chair the Task Force.  The Task Force includes over a dozen organizations and more than 100 individuals representing the private sector and law enforcement.

Tucson Electric Power, the Tucson Police Department and Allied Barton Security co-hosted a metal theft prevention training session for members of the Metal Theft Task Force on December 12th.  This was an abbreviated training session modified specifically for the business community. Lieutenant Terry Alling of Metal Theft Training and Consultants, LLC instructed both law enforcement and civilian personnel about issues related to metal theft.
